CROSSFIT GAMES 2019
Thank you to #BruteStrengthTraining for stepping up to the challenge. You made an impact on these guys and they look forward to the next competition. Thank you to TDCJ in allowing this event to happen and sharing the video!!!
This was a friendly competition that goes a long way at the Hughes Unit in giving a sense of purpose to those who, at times, have trouble finding it.
D4C hosted a CrossFit Event for the offenders at the Alfred D. Hughes Unit where they were able to put their strength and endurance to the test for the first-time. CrossFit Tournaments allow offenders to challenge each other while also challenging themselves through difficult obstacles and tests of agility and strength. A big thank you to Brute Strength for coming to compete with the offenders and provide tips for training. We would like to thank everyone who was a part of making this happen. We are looking forward to a next time!
Brute Strength’s professional athletes competing against the top 30 inmates from the Hughes Unit!
Brute Strength is a company that trains professional athletes all around the world, and two of their top athletes, brothers Ryan and Zach Sowder, were stoked to come and compete against the Hughes Unit men. Ryan placed 30th in CrossFit Games 2019 and is rated top 30 in the world, and his brother Zach’s team placed 5th in the world. The men wanting to compete from Hughes had tryouts to make the top 30 three months ago, and since then have been training very hard for five hours a day, three days a week. Volunteer, Mark Wheeler, shared he has personally attended a practice at the unit and was very impressed with all the hard work and excitement these guys have competing against professionals.
Brute Strength has a catering company that they use for their athletes to feed them Nutrition Balanced meals and they provided meals for the athletes and inmates competing that day. 12 D4C volunteers helped and juried the competition. Matthew Bruce, owner of Brute Strength, and a 2008 & 2012 Olympic athlete himself, came with his team of professional coach and staff to put on talks about nutrition, encouragement, and motivation. Testimonials throughout the day and opportunities for prayer and altar call at the end of the ceremonies. Games started at 9:00 and until 3:30 followed by an award ceremony to follow. What an awesome day for these men to experience fun with some healthy competition. They were inspired to be all that God has called them to be! Thank you so much for keeping this event covered in your prayers!
