The last time we took the three-and-a-half-hour trek to the Hilltop unit to host Moments with Mom was March 13th, 2020.
Our trailer was packed with all the things needed to host 30 families — we had an hour or so before we were to arrive at the unit, so we stopped for lunch. The restaurant TV was on Fox Sports when there was a news break from the Texas Governor indicating some shut downs due to COVID. The only thing he mentioned was that Texas prisons would be limiting visitation. Bob and I wondered what “limit visitation meant,” so I called the unit and was told our event was still on, so we finished our meal and headed to the unit. We were only a few blocks away when the call came that ALL TDCJ prisons were going on COVID lockdown. My first thought was we’d be able to reschedule in a few weeks…
…never in my wildest dreams would I think it would be two years before we’d be able to host another Moments with Mom.
Our volunteers are so excited to be heading to Gatesville next weekend for our first Moments with Mom event in two years! Saturday, March 19th, 15 moms and their children from the Hilltop unit, will be reunited together for a day of fun and reconnecting, as though prison walls didn’t exist around them.
These days are always such a special time for us as we get to see the joy on their faces, as they spend time hugging and talking, doing the activities we have for them, and enjoying the unique experience of having a day that’s just for them and their kids. The day will include games and crafts, lunch and a movie…all things that some have never even gotten to do with their children. This event is always a time to make wonderful memories and a day that they will treasure for a lifetime.

Please pray for traveling safety for our volunteers and for each of these families that are coming in to be a part of this day. We know this event will be a day full of making great memories for each of these moms and their children.
