“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Silence! Be still!’ The wind ceased and there was great
calm. Then, He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?’”
– Mark 4:39-40 (HCSB)
Being in prison is not an easy thing, especially when facing day-to-day issues. Some are more intense like waiting on parole or the prospect of it which was my case. I was so caught up in the idea of going home, I didn’t know how to handle the set-off (denial) when it finally did arrive. I threw a tantrum – I was angry – I railed against the parole system…so on and so forth. I mean, this turned my world upside down. I was focusing solely on the problem, stewing in my own pity, languishing in the hurt of my denial of freedom. I let this steer me off course to my detriment.
Many times, the struggles and trials we face can be daunting and fearsome, causing turmoil and upheaval in our lives. We tend to get lost in our problems, thinking there is no remedy in sight. I know I have! I can tell you from personal experience that you shouldn’t be, especially amongst the Body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It shows a lack of faith. In the above verse, Jesus rebukes the seas. In hindsight, He could be rebuking us, because instead of coming to Him for the solution, we whine and moan with a woe is me attitude, when we have an awesome God Who is greater than whatever we go through or are going through.
Jesus is telling us, “Hey you! I’m right here! Be quiet! Be still, come to me, and know that I am God. Put your faith in me, fear not. I will navigate you through the storms that rage in your life, for I’m the God of all peace, the God who saves.” Whatever you are facing, whether it be trials, hurts, depression, or addiction, don’t let it consume you. Put your faith in Jesus, lean on Him, let Him work it out, and let Him bring great calm to your life. He is always right there where you are.
