In Luke 6:47-49 Jesus poses a thought-provoking question:
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”
Through this rhetorical question, Jesus emphasizes the significance of not merely hearing His words but also putting them into practice. He goes on to illustrate the consequences of failing to do so, comparing it to building a life without a firm foundation, destined to collapse.
By using the analogy of building a house, Jesus vividly portrays the consequences of not heeding His words. He contrasts two builders—one who builds on a firm foundation and another who builds without one. The one who builds on a firm foundation is like someone who hears Jesus’ words and puts them into practice. This person is compared to a wise builder who constructs a house on a solid rock. When the storms of life come, the house stands strong, unshaken by the winds and floods.
On the other hand, the one who hears Jesus’ words but fails to put them into practice is likened to a foolish builder who constructs a house on the sand. Such a house may seem sturdy and impressive on the surface, but when the storms come, it collapses, leaving its builder devastated and without shelter.
Jesus’ analogy serves as a profound reminder of the importance of obedience and action in our spiritual lives.
Merely hearing Jesus’ words and acknowledging His lordship is not enough. We must actively put His teachings into practice, allowing them to shape our thoughts, actions, and character.
True discipleship involves a transformation of the heart and a commitment to live according to God’s principles. This requires a daily commitment to be in his word, to align our lives with God’s will, as well as our surrendering our desires, motives, and decisions to Him. It entails seeking His guidance and relying on His strength to navigate the challenges and storms of life.
By actively living out our faith, we establish a solid foundation for our lives that can withstand any trial or tribulation.
Luke 6:47-49 – As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. – NIV
