Blurry Vision

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

My husband seems to have this internal clock that knows when 5:00 a. m. rolls around,  he can rise and shine with minimal effort.   I, on the other hand, am not the shining type at 5:00 a.m.   My first reaction when Bob tells me it is time to get up is, “please, say it is not so.”  My typical daily routine is to stumble out of bed, do my morning tinkle, apply this magic cream under my eyes to take some of the puffiness out, find my glasses then head to the kitchen for a cup of Joe.   But one particular morning I decided I wanted to weigh myself before heading to the kitchen.

With that goal in mind,  I headed towards the bathroom and started preparing myself to step on the bathroom scales.  I am sure many of you can relate to the love, hate relationship my scales and I have. I took a deep breath, as if that was going to cause the number on the scales to be less,  then  mustered up the courage to step up. The scales blinked a few times and the number appeared, it was about then I realized somewhere between the bedroom and the bathroom scales I had removed my glasses.  I squinted a few time, so I could make out what the scales were saying then started looking around for my glasses. I checked the nightstand, felt around in the covers, even took a look in the closet, no glasses.   My mind was reeling, where could they be I had not left the bedroom???  A minute of searching had turned into five.  I knew my cup of Joe, and my devotional was waiting. I knew I need to get going because I had to be at work by 7:00 a. m.  I couldn’t keep wasting time looking for these glasses, about that time a brilliant idea popped into my mind. “Susan,  grab the extra pair out of your nightstand, surely if I can see better, I can find them”.  At the very moment I placed the glasses on my face my vision became clear and so did my thoughts.  OMG, how sad I thought, needing glasses to find my glasses.  Instantly I pondered whether my spiritual vision was as bad as my physical vision.

As important as our physical eyesight is our spiritual eyes are even more valuable.  Once a year I am required to visit my optometrist for an eye exam to determine the well being of my sight. As followers of Christ, we need our spiritual vision to be re-examined periodically as well. The world we live is filled with murkiness causing our vision to be blurry producing confusion which is not of God ( see 1 Corinthians 14:33).

When our spiritual vision becomes blurry, when we are unclear of the direction we should to take we need God’s word to bring clarity.  We need things to be made plain for us to truly understand God’s will for our life.  Clear vision comes from God and his word (Psalms 119:105).    Spiritual vision is what makes the unseen visible and the unknown possible.

And to those wondering if I ever found my glasses yes,  they were laying out in plain sight.  So tell me is  your vision is it 20/20 today?
