“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosenthe weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.”
I Corinthians 1:27
King David faithfully stood on this concept. Not only displaying this with Goliath, but also by gathering those he chose to be his fighting men. David used the seemingly foolish of the world to be his courageous entourage…his crew. “And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented (bitter of soul) gathered to him. So, he became captain over them, and there were about four hundred men with him.” (1 Samuel 22:2)
Have you ever been in distress? In debt? Discontented? Rejoice! God is calling us! He wants to be captain over us in His army! Here the Lord is calling us, as David called together the lowly and the foolish… “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” (Matthew 9:12). We all know Matthew wrote the book of Matthew. As it is written in the book of Matthew, “…as Jesus passed on from here, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. And He said to him, ‘follow Me’, so he arose and followed Him.” (Matthew 9:9).
By Matthew writing this eyewitness statement, that meant he had to admit that he was a tax collector and that Jesus called him in the midst of his dirty business. That’s how He calls us to join His army. Notice that Matthew didn’t say, “Jesus called perfect me to show everyone how awesome I am!” No, he implied that Jesus caught him, red-handed, penny-pinching, probably from nursing mothers, those that were lame, and God only knows who else, and told him to follow Him anyway! We have to get out of our minds how awesome we are or how unworthy we are, and just say, “God, I’m a mess! Help me! I want to join Your Army! Help me out of this booth I’m in and help me follow You!”
Prayer: My good Father, give ear in the Name of Jesus, “Therefore, I will humble myself under Your mighty hand, that You might exalt me in due season,” (I Peter 5:6); and not in my timing. “Let me in any wickedness, forsake my ways along with my unrighteousness as well as my thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:7). God, all I can say is help me with this. “Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I’ve lost all my things and consider them garbage that I may gain You.” (Philippians 3:8). Let no one lead me astray (I John 3:7). Forgive me Lord for this…if I am trying to win the approval of human beings, instead steer me to only want to win Your approval. If I’m trying to please people, I won’t be a servant to You, Jesus (Galatians 1:10). I want to be a servant of Christ. I want to be in the army You’ve called me to partake in even if it means I must humble myself and admit I’m just like the men David chose…in distress, in debt, and discontented. I will do as You’ve said and “prophesy as You’ve commanded me, and the breath of life will come into me, and I will live and stand upon my feet, in Your exceedingly great Army.” (Ezekial 37:10) Amen.
